Many people have become over night millionaires by just selling one domain. Now domain flipping is no longer lottery like lucrative as it was once before. This is because all the short, pronounceable and dictionary words and keywords domains have been taken. The entry of corporate houses into domain flipping has seriously dent the chance of individual internet marketers like us. But still there are ways to make a living by flipping domains. Here I will discuss a new strategy.
gTLD or Generic Top Level Domains are new entrants into domain markets. gTLD are extensions other than COM, NET, BIZ, ORG, INFO and country specific extensions like IN, US or UK. There are 1000+ gTLD domains available in market but you need to understand the cost, demand and profitability factors before jumping into the market.
What is gTLD ?
Generic Top Level domain are simply dot anything, i.e, www.dubai.cab, www.seo.tips, www.football.club etc. These domains might be restricted for the purpose they are created. For example, www.berlin.berlin may available only to residents of Berlin or Germany.
gTLDs can be classified into following five categories;
Generics: The extensions having general purpose names and possibility of wider uses, e.g. CAR, CLUB, FILM etc.
Geographical: These domains cover specific geographical area such as NYC (New York), London, Berlin.
Brands: They represent particular brands like APPLE, BMW and SAMSUNG.
Community: These domains intended for various communities, e.g, LSTB, CHRISTIAN, ATHEIST etc.
IDN: These domains use non Latin character
It is important that ICANN has to approve gTLD before they start operating. At present many gTLDS have been authorized by ICANN.
So, How to profit from gTLD ?
Google SEO boss Matt Cutts has hinted that new gTLDs will be treated same as the current domain extensions like COM, NET etc. In fact many gTLDs have already doing extremely well in search engine. Since most of the keywords and short domains have been registered, the demand for gTLD is bound to rise. The process has already been started and many gTLD domains sold for thousands of dollars.
Consider the following gTLD domain.
Coffee.club (Sold for US $100, 000)
World.estate (US $35, 000)
Mobile.co.com (US $25, 000)
Eat.club (US $20, 000)
Luxury.estate (US $50, 000)
Soccur.guru (US $12, 500)
Wellness.today (US $12, 500)
Kneesurgery.expert (US $12, 500)
Marrian.solutions (US $12, 500)
Because.solutions (US $12, 500)
Airfare.to (US $4, 000)
Hawaii.email (US $3, 000)
Most of the above gTLD have become operational in January, 2014 but they already have made their presence felt. Because non availability of keyword rich traditional domains, people will gradually opt for gTLDs as they not only get a keyword rich domain but their domain extensions make clear what their business is about. The arrival of gTLDS will make Google’s job easier to return only relevant results.
The second important point to be understood is the keyword and extension of a gTLD should match well. Domains like Copywriting.solutions will be obviously more valuable than Copywriting.travel. So, while choosing a gTLD, make sure both the keyword and extension make sense.
Factors to Keep in Mind
gTLDs though offer a lot of possibilities, they are also fraught with many problems. For individual domain flipper, the method of pre registration for a gTLD is cost prohibitive. It has been seen that most of important domains are purchased with higher price by big companies. It has also been observed that often the registrants themselves sell important domains to their own subsidiaries or friendly companies with hope to make money in future.
The registration cost of all gTLDs is higher than the traditional domains like COM, NET, ORG and INFO. Some gTLD like TO and PHOTOGRAPHY cost $1000 plus for registration and renewal. This makes flipping some gTLD not profitable. The rest of other gTLDs cost less than $100 but higher than traditional domains.
Some gTLDs have restrictive operation. For example, if you stay outside Germany, you cannot register domains having BERLIN. Further, some registrants have monopoly over some gTLDSs because they have paid for exclusive rights. Donuts Inc. and Unregistry and United Domains have the rights for majority of gTLDs.
Recently, we witnessed a lot of UDRPs being filed for TM infringement even though the extensions are gTLDs. Domains such as wallstreet.lgbt, playboy.london. So, don’t register trademarked gTLD even the domain is available.
The gTLD revolutions present an unique opportunity for newbie who missed the bus of COM craze. While registering gTLDs use your judgement properly so that you maximise your profit by registering right domains.
